Video: Oncology — Exploring the hallmarks of cancer with live-cell analysis

The hallmarks of cancer are continually being updated. This constantly evolving picture of tumor biology is helping to shed new light on the behavior of many cancers, as well as providing new pharmacological targets and treatment strategies. Much of this progress has been driven by technological advances, and the last decade has seen huge strides made in the field of live-cell assays, using both traditional 2D techniques and advanced 3D cell culture models.

One such RNA repeat disorder is myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), affecting intellectual abilities and central nervous system impairment, among other symptoms. Although a well-known RNA toxicity disorder, the molecular and cellular pathways affected in DM1 brain remain largely unknown.

Novel immune therapies include chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy and TCR-based adoptive T cell (TCR-T) therapy.

This can provide additional information about morphology and help to easily identify contamination or other plating issues over time without the need to remove the plate from the incubator and look at it under a manual scope.

Immunocytochemistry (ICC) as a basic cell imaging technique has been engrained into every cell biologist’s repertoire. Fluorescently labeled antibodies added onto fixed cells help visualize protein expression in the cells. While traditional ICC yields information on protein localization i.e. where the protein of interest is expressed, a big caveat remains – it is unable to capture protein expression changes over time, the ‘when’ of cellular dynamics.
