Video: Oncology — Exploring the hallmarks of cancer with live-cell analysis

December 11th, 2018

The hallmarks of cancer are continually being updated. This constantly evolving picture of tumor biology is helping to shed new light on the behavior of many cancers, as well as providing new pharmacological targets and treatment strategies. Much of this progress has been driven by technological advances, and the last decade has seen huge strides made in the field of live-cell assays, using both traditional 2D techniques and advanced 3D cell culture models.

In Bad Company: How Dysfunctional Glia Affect Neighboring Neurons

November 14th, 2018

RNA toxicity due to repeat-containing RNA can cause neurological diseases through gain of function. One such RNA repeat disorder is myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), affecting intellectual abilities and central nervous system impairment, among other symptoms. Although a well-known RNA toxicity disorder, the molecular and cellular pathways affected in DM1 brain remain largely unknown.

Harnessing the Power of the Immune System: Optimizing T Cell Killing Cancer Immunotherapy

October 29th, 2018

Immunotherapy has emerged as a real game-changer in cancer therapeutics. After decades of research, there is now hope of boosting an individual’s own immune system to fight cancer by tapping into T cell-based therapies. One group of patients particularly benefiting from these new approaches are those with malignancies previously considered ‘difficult to treat’. Novel immune therapies include chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy and TCR-based adoptive T cell (TCR-T) therapy.

Software: Scan on Demand

October 10th, 2018 | Debi Chakraborty

Use Scan on Demand to image plates at another objective and linking those scans together using the Add Scans feature in the software. This can provide additional information about morphology and help to easily identify contamination or other plating issues over time without the need to remove the plate from the incubator and look at it under a manual scope.

Expert view: New developments in real‑time live‑cell analysis

September 5th, 2018 | Del Trezise, Senior Director at Sartorius

Live-cell analysis is now a well-established method that is part of the everyday cell biologist’s armoury for understanding cell biology. For over a decade, the functionality, throughput, and ease of use offered by real-time live-cell analysis has provided a platform for accurate and reproducible cell biology analysis in multiple biomedical research areas, including oncology, immuno-oncology, immunology and now neuroscience.

Capture Protein Expression Changes Over Time in Living Cells

August 23rd, 2018

Immunocytochemistry (ICC) as a basic cell imaging technique has been engrained into every cell biologist’s repertoire. Fluorescently labeled antibodies added onto fixed cells help visualize protein expression in the cells. While traditional ICC yields information on protein localization i.e. where the protein of interest is expressed, a big caveat remains – it is unable to capture protein expression changes over time, the ‘when’ of cellular dynamics.

The Immune System Reacts to Neurological Stress: Catching Killer T Cells Live in Action

April 6th, 2018

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have long suffered a bad rap. An overdose of ROS is detrimental and causes a state of oxidative stress. But eliminating them isn’t the answer either as our bodies need ROS for basic survival. Moreover, ROS are essential to immune system function, and act to combat perceived threats to the body. However, a lot is unknown about the role of ROS signaling in immune responses, especially in a diseased state.
